Hey guys, it's Ultros again. Its been pretty quiet over here, so I figured that for the remaining of us, we should do something to help further to game while Shaun is taking care of life stuff.
I'm working on making a really nice version of the game to show to people at Expo's and stuff, but in the meantime, why don't we do something that's a community effort - try to make more quests!
So let's brainstorm! I'm currently working on a quest involving Erf Beto's Chaos Sorcerer as a boss, where the main monsters are Golems, Flying Eyes, and Shadows. The Golems have an ability to automatically receive 1 free success on DEF rolls, whereas the Flying Eyes shoot lasers from their... well, eye, and the Shadows receive additional ATK bonuses for engaging a hero that is already engaged.
Oh! And I'm coming up with Spell Books, which allow heroes to learn spells for free if they discover them. This is the only way to learn a few unique instances of spells, as their arcane lore is forgotten to the town wizards where most mages go to learn. Which means I have to come up with some unique and balanced spells to go along with it. I'm liking Tomes because it gives Wizards a way to get some decent spell casting loot without having to rely purely on gear for their haul.
So anyway! What are you all working on, fellow Plungers?

Interesting that you want to start a quest brainstorm, when I've been cleaning up a doc about a series of quests I've been mulling about for months (or year?). The stars must be aligning. hehehe Mine is gonna be called "The Wedding of the Witch Queen". I'll try to upload this week (or maybe just share the google doc for visualization). Anyway, let's talk about this quest you have there. So, what's the story behind it? I like the mechanics for the monsters. I'd suggest the Shadows also gain DEF bonus when not adjacent to the attacker, or maybe when they are adjacent to a wall. And of course, flyers and shadows should be able to pass through heroes spaces. Finding spell books sound fun. I'll have something like that in my quest too. Actually, there's a new tile I'm working on, the Library. You may find a way to get it in this quest too!

Hi all! The forum lives! By any means I'm no example... I promised myself to do a report on my gaming sessions, but actually I never got the chance to actually do a full session on Plungin, my wife finds the game to complex... and it's really not her style... she's not really into modular boards, and all my friends decided to have kids now. So the gaming as stopped for a while. Anyway, I really like the concept of DP and drop by often to see if any news come up and this does look like a really good idea! The Tomes sound wonderful, may I suggest some scrolls to the mix? One time use spells with stat requirements! Shadows should probably be hard to hit... like only hit by magic weapons, but maybe that's to powerful. But has erf_berto asked do you already have a story behind it?
Looking forward for any news quest!

Actually, there's a new tile I'm working on, the Library. You may find a way to get it in this quest too! I can't say that I had much for a story planned initially - I only selected monsters that would be thematically aligned with one another and said, "Meh, I can figure out the plot later." But if I had to make one up as I'm typing this... it'd probably be that the Chaos Sorcerer is attempting a powerful ritual. He's trying to turn a 1 mile radius area around his tower into a place of planar chaos, where he'd be able to rule due to his influence over Chaotic Magic. So the heroes have been hired by the local Wizard's Guild to go and put a stop to this madness before the Sorcerer does irreparable damage. Mechanics wise, the Sorcerer would have erected a powerful shield around himself to keep others from disrupting him during the ritual. The heroes would have to find the magical Tome with the spell's counter magic, thus disabling the protective seal and allowing him to be harmed. As for Tomes I've made for this, I think this would be a scenario to introduce Chaos Magic, which is a brand of magic that can be very powerful, but also is entirely random in direction and cause (for example, one could do a spell that damages every enemy in a straight line from the caster, but the direction that it flies is randomly determined on a 1d4). Another brand of Chaos Magic is a Polymorph Self spell, wherein the caster is able to readjust his stats for a random number of turns before reverting to his normal form. Stuff like that. And I'm excited for your quest as well Erf! I was worried that this game had been sort of brushed under the rug... I even contacted Shut Up and Sit Down about taking a look at it for a review, and they said they'd be happy to take a look at it, so we'll see if it picks up! - Ultros

He's trying to turn a 1 mile radius area around his tower into a place of planar chaos, where he'd be able to rule due to his influence over Chaotic Magic. Only 1 mile radius? That sorcerer is not very ambitious is he? That sort of gave me an idea to possibly link those adventures together though. The Witch Queen has made it know among the circles of evil wizards that she is now seeking a consort to rule by her side. But of course the Witch Queen won't marry any 2 bits evil wizard! The one who manages to impress her the most by completing the biggest evil ritual will win her hand in marriage. Evil wizards from all across the land are now scrambling to outperform each other in powerful arcane rituals to win the favor of the Queen. Of course, this detail is unknown to the players until they try to stop what looks like your run of the mill crazy Chaos Sorcerer who is attempting to turn a 50 miles radius area around his tower into a place of planar chaos. Once they (hopefully) manage to stop him, they learn about the Witch Queen's competition and realize that this one loony wizard is only the tip of a much sinister iceberg...

Oh man... I like that "competition" to marry the Witch Queen. But I had other plans for her wedding bells... :-( d**n, that idea is good. i MUST do something to connect our quests... ;-)
About Chaos Magic, that sounds very interesting as a new Magic School. Must be developed further, I demand! :-)

What was your original idea? There is always the possibility to modify/adapt/shoehorn it to fit the new idea... Essentially, after being magically imprisoned for hundreds of years, she'd now try to marry the King and become rightful ruler of the Realm. I guess the "Marry the Witch" contest could begin after her wedding with the real king fails. I'm imagining her as a skilled enchantress, so she could either be genuinely looking for a new partner in crime, or be the Black Widow looking for a new dead husband to steal power from. One possible issue here is that, during the quest, the Heroes may learn about the her former husband's identity (which I probably should have run past his author first). You see, the Witch Queen was the wife of a powerful evil sorcerer whom she betrayed in order to steal his powers. But later, he was resurrected by a group of followers and, to reclaim his lost power, he went through a transformation to became the Lich King - the very same one who has been terrorizing the Realm for so long! If her lover still "lives" then "Till Death do us part" is still valid, isn't it? Now, who'd want to openly challenge this lovely relationship?

I had this twisted idea for another one of the "suitors". A powerful necromancer raised a legion of undead... but not as his army but rather as guest for the wedding, best man/bridesmaid, flower girls, caterers, orchestra, etc...

Alright, so here are the stats for monsters in my quests so far.
Golems ATK 5 DEF 5 MOV 3 MAG 0 LIF 1 RNG: 3 DEX 1 WIT 1 RES 4 XP: 18 Power – Sturdy: Golems receive an automatic 1 success on defense rolls against attacks. Law: Brutal – This Monster will always melee attack the nearest Hero. It will use an action to move closer if necessary. It will also follow-up a Pushback. Description: Automated constructs built from stone and magic, Golems make perfect sentries for any magically minded master. Their powerful form gives them natural defenses against most attacks, allowing them to stall for time while their creator works.
Flying Eye ATK: 6 DEF: 4 MOV: 4 MAG 0 LIF 1 RNG: 6 DEX: 2 WIT: 2 RES: 2 Power – Fly: This model may move through intervening models. Law: Maneuver – This Monster will use an action to move away and range attack the nearest Hero. It will use both actions to attack if it is out of range of a Hero's attack or a move action will not take it out of a Hero's range of attack. XP: 16 Description: While not a servant of the Chaos Sorcerer, these Flying Eyes have been attracted to the magical energies in his tower and have taken residence. They're particularly annoying, as they have a penchant for absorbing ambient magical energy and projecting it out of their cornea as a beam of multi-colored light.
Shadow ATK: 6 DEF: 5 MOV: 4 MAG 0 LIF 1 RNG: 6 DEX: 3 WIT: 1 RES: 3 XP: 18 Power – Backstabber: If the shadow engages a model that is already in combat with another monster, they receive a +1 ATK bonus. Law: Sneaky – This Monster will wait and only attack the nearest Hero in an adjacent space to another monster. The Monster will default to Brutal if attacked by a Hero. Description: Malevolent beings called forth from the Shadow Realm, they wait in the darkness until they can find an unwitting Hero and drain him of his life force.
So what do we think? I also had an idea for a type of Swarm monster that would confer a minor negative to MAG stats for a round if it successfully damaged an enemy with magic, but I don't know if it'd be too many monsters for a quest.
Also, I'm thinking up a Mid-boss fight with the Chaos Sorcerer's Acolyte. Could be interesting... assuming I come up with more ideas than just a basic concept.
Critique away!
PS - Yeah, I didn't quite follow the XP guidelines to a T... they seemed kind of low initially.

I really like what you have done here. The Stats, Powers and Laws all combine to create some innovative monsters that will be fun to take on. Good Monsters make a good Quest. I cannot see anything I would change. The stats all seem appropriate and suit the theme of each Monster. Very well thought out. ;D

Yeah, they look great.
I was going to suggest upping the Golem's DEF, but his Sturdy trait seems to do the trick - I just wonder, if it means an automatic success in Def checks, and also adds 1 on top of any success he gets?
You're possibly trying to limit 1 special ability per creature, but I think shadows could move through heroes and obstacles.
