Thursday night was the first night of my new campaign, Bustling Bordertown. I'd been on hiatus for a while, but a friend of mine decided he wanted to give it a shot, so I threw together a little adventure for him to check it out. My other player has played with me before, which meant that he could lead while the other followed.
The beginning of the campaign took place in front of a rundown fortification they later found out was called Gallows Castle. I didn't give them much insight to the castle yet, I wanted to wait to flesh everything out to not sound thrown-together.
My vet player, Stu, who was playing a spellcaster character, begun encircled by a group of six grey, faceless humanoids that stood about waist-height to him. (I like to start my campaigns with a bit of action instead of "you're in a tavern...") The other character, James, a hunter/trapper was passing by just in time to see the encounter start off.
I had several types of enemies, indistinguishable from one another. At the most basic, there were two grunts, a healer, a "stunner", and a buffer. The grunts were jumping around and punching the characters, but not really dealing damage. James (the archer) was a little baffled when I told him that the arrow he stuck into one of the creatures was just absorbed into his body, leaving no wound. (This was a result of an attack roll of 7)
After the battle, they went immediately to Bordertown to report the attack. When they got there, they found out that they were aware of the threat and haven't been able to eradicate them. So Stu immediately takes to the library to find out more. He encounters an elderly wizard who heals him (with fire, no less). Stu almost immediately pleaded that the man take him as an apprentice. Being the wise wizard that he is, he tells Stu that he was the one to bring the Faceless to Bordertown, and can't get rid of them. He prepared a scroll to close the gate to the realm from which they come, but he can't go there, because there is already suspicion that he had something to do with it. If he were to be found guilty, he'd be hanged. So Stu agrees to take scroll to Gallows Castle and close the gate, which will be the focus of the next session.
While Stu was in the Library, James stayed outside the city walls to do some foraging and getting back to nature. He built a fire, and was enjoying a fresh kill (bunny), when he saw a shadowed figure just outside the campfire's light. He threw a lit stick at it, and saw that it was one of the faceless creatures. He bolted for the town, but another of the creatures appeared in his path. Pretty freaked out at this point, James put his shoulder down and flipped the thing over, so it landed behind him somewhere. He never looked back to check, and got himself a room in the inn that night.
The session ended there, and everyone seemed pretty pleased. I should be able to update this after every session, which should be once a week, maybe twice per week sometimes.I'm working on a whole lot more to throw at these guys, stay tuned.
