Many newcomers to this hobby may not know who helped start this great hobby. So I guess it's time to name some names and give a selection of what they have done.
1st Generation Paper Figure Artists
Gwindel (Patrick Crusiau or PC) One-Monk (Jim Hartman or OM) Shadowolf (Paul or SW) Shaungamer88 (Shaun Austin or SG) Scarecrow (Wayne Peters or SC)
Each created their own style of hand drawn line art, hand or computer colored art, free for personal use, 2D paper figures. Most are 25mm and larger scale drawings. There are many excellent artists that work in 20mm and smaller but they will not be covered here.
You may have heard several terms used to describe these types of paper miniatures. Stand In's, Stand Up's, Flat's, Card or Card-stock figures, are all used to describe them.
Some are created with black borders, others with white. Some have duplicated images for front and back. Others have true back art or blacked-out sillouette's.
Most are fold over designs, where, once folded, the image lines up from side to side. There are some 3 sided (triangular) and 4 Sided (Square) figure designs out there, but the artists mentioned here worked in 2 sided or 2D.
If you hear a reference to 3D art it usually does not refer to a 3 sided figure but the art type being created with a 3D graphics program like poser. It would not be hand drawn line art.
2nd Generation Paper Figure Artists
Oversoul (OA) Brynbrenainn (OA and MA-OM, SG) Shaungamer88 (MA-PC, OM) Historygamer2 (MA-PC, SC) Mahotsukai_UK (MA-PC) Acarhj (MA-PC) Antonio (MA-PC, SW) Arkcaver (MA-PC) Squirmydad (MA-PC)
Note :Original Art (OA) and Modified Art (MA) by artist.
I hope to use this thread to eventually cover all the promonent artists out there. So if you are an artist and haven't been listed please be patient. If you are and incorrect information is posted, please let us know to correct it.

These are not links... so unless I'm missing the decryption key in the CrackerJack box I don't know where the references come from. Otherwise this is a great list and very useful too (once the links are there).

Unfortunately the ONE site you would ever need to find all the files of these great artists and many more does not exist anymore... Now most of us have scattered to the wind. Patrick has his own site: www.gwindel.eu/index.htmlONE-MONK is once again working on building his own site. I am not sure where Shadowwolf's stuff can be found if someone has a link feel free to add it. The Great Shaun's stuff can be found here and also his personal site: www.geocities.com/shaungamer88Some of us also can be found on the New Paperworlds site: paperworlds.papermakeit.com/index.php

Aaahhh therein lies the tale Lord Abaddon of Wormwood,
And to tell the tale we must venture back in time.........
Once upon a time there was a yahoo message group called Brabantini started by Patrick Crusiau. His art was most prevalent but another artist Jim Hartman came up with the concept of a monthly miniature contest to encourage new artists. It was called VIP (Visions in Paper) and it was a success but with success came problems. Jim was also a talented artist and created large volumes of work. Yahoo groups only allowed 20mb of storage space so while it was a small organization it quickly outgrew its humble origins. The name VIP was changed to MIP (Miniatures in Paper) around this time. A second Backup yahoo message group for MIP entries was created. Between both groups the amount of data could not be stored however and rigorous file clearing process had to be established. Many one time artist files had to be deleted to make way for more.
At this time free internet space was hard to come by without constant bombardment of advertising popups. Forum sites were available but offered little free file storage. The original founders soon turned over the running of the groups to others as the workload increased.
About this time an individual (Stevemike) established his own server and forum site (Paperworlds.com) and offered free use to all paper miniature designers and paper model makers. Unlimited storage and a forum format was to tempting for many and it solved many of the other annoying free site hassles. The files were sort of transferred to this new site but the transfer was never quite complete as there were server software issues and hacking issues. The MIP underwent a change to MMIP to include paper models in it's title and though the mechanics were still handled on the yahoo group site Models and Miniatures in Paper the files were placed on Paperworlds.
There were several instances of hacking and eventually the owner had to request monetary donations to keep the site up. I'm not quite sure what all actually transpired but in the end Paperworlds never came back on line and from what I hear is not going to.
So Historygamer2 (that would be me) tried to save a large amount of the work by trying to help the new Brabantini management restructure the group to better use the 20mb allocation and begin restoring the files there. Communication and or personality difficulties (still not sure which) ensued along with a general lack of member interest. I decided to try to recreate several sites dedicated to the artist, who could then take them over when I could no longer handle the workload. An effort to keep all the art still accessable to everyone. Some artists already had there own sites but a few did not have the time to create and manage sites as well as time to create new art so I figured I could pitch in.
Back on the farm, time marched on and Yahoo upped the storage capability of their groups to 100mb each. One other member (Claudio) of the old Paperworlds also stepped up to host a server for free Papermakeit but accepted donations.
Now there are several splinter groups in both yahoo message format and forum/blog format. Papermakeit seems to be the new replacement Paperworlds location as the MMIP management is working with them
Brabantini has little content since it was never restored. I went on to start several new groups on yahoo. One for paper figures alone, one solely for converting work done by Patrick Crusiau, one for how to make paper figures and one each for the prominent artists to display their work.
Since I have heard many grumblings about work being scattered, I requested Bobby and the moderators here to be the host of this series of paper activities discussions. Thank you Oversoulgames! With his and all your help/input, maybe we can find a better way to structure all of this, to make a better community.
I purposely did not include a crackerjack decoder since this is redirection (in my opinoion) and is up to this sites owner to approve or disapprove. Since he has given his approval however, I will insert the addresses that I have currently. Remember though, unless this community finally comes together to support all of this work and chip in to keep it hosted either in one place or on many, you may never get to see any of this work in the future. And believe me constantly moving files is time consuming and not fun at all.
For those of you that could shed more light on this history please feel free to do so, I may have been too closely involved at times. I am sure there was more going on unseen by me.
I would also like to encourage further discussion on this as well as Bobby's thread on membership for this forum Oversoulgames! Let's see what we can make the future look like?

I'm currently builiding a MMiP files archive and showcase history website. It'll have all of the entries back to the beginning, links to creators sites (like this place), and hopefully pics of every entry. That last piece is a bit sticky as many artists didn't provide thumbnails and I've lost a few things over the yesr. It should be online by the end of this next week as I'm not letting the lack of thumbnails halt the process. Hopefully people will send me pics to go along with the content once everything's online.

Just a minor note . . hardly worth mentioning really . . . but Jim's initial competition was called Visions in Paper but was changed due to a confusion with another competition. (Visions in Putty???)

You are correct sir! In the first section of the history it starts with "VIP...WTF?" and I have most of the highpoints and details covered.

I've added the 2nd generations artists to the original post and made changes to the history message that Shaunggamer and Squirmydad had mentioned (VIP). This note is to notify everyone of the updates.
