I've been thinking of various concepts of combining board or mini gaming with software. Basically still having a physical board, minis, counters, what have you, but having software that through a simple interface, takes care of complex features of a game, though not fully replacing dice...more like taking the place of tables and charts, or even allowing for calculations or systems that would be far too complex to bother with in a game without computer aid.
I have seen this game Ex Illis, that kind of does this. Has anyone played this game? Site is here: en.ex-illis.com It looks kind of interesting, but no dice
I had heard of this awhile back, and it's apparently available in some places, but no one I know has it and nowhere seems to carry it. They have a video of play and it seems easy enough to manage, but that is of course what they would want you to think.
I have played some other games where we kept track of some things on a computer, but mostly rpgs, where it kind of made things simpler to do...it wasn't necessary to play, it was just to have all the stats/rules stuff searchable and at hand rather than a ton of books and papers.
My question for anyone who cares to answer is: Would you play a game like this? Or even purchase one? A game where you absolutely HAD to have a computer or smartphone in the immediate area in order to play? It seems like there could be issues for any sort of organized play...could you play a tournament or a pick up game at a convention? What if there was bad reception for wireless, or no connection at all for a game that required internet? If internet were not required, you still need a computer on hand...if a game were good enough, would these things not be considered a hindrance?
