I was looking at the monsters from the Lich King set (have printed them, but not cut them out yet). I noticed that unlike most the other monsters and heroes, the backs and fronts are exactly the same.
Are they meant to be "all aware", or do people have a trick for keeping track of which way they are facing (for the few situations where it's important).

I noticed that too, after printing I haven't played the Lich King quest yet. Hadn't given it any though.

Actually, facing doesn't matter much in DP.
So, to cut time, artists may choose to refrain from drawing the backs of monsters. I've done it with my minis, so I could release them faster. Also - shameless self promotion - check the link on my sig, and my minis' thread.
As for the Lich King quest, Shadowolf has plans of re-releasing his undead, completely revamped and with backs (there's a preview of his new Lich King somewhere in these forums...).
It just takes time... I should know, as I have an unreleased project that dates back to 2009 (with minis that have no backs too).

I just drew a little black arrow on one side of the base, it's small enough to remain unobtrusive, but just big enough that you can tell. I find facing to be a good tie-breaker when deciding where the monster will attack, eg, if there is a hero on either side, the monster is going to go at the one it's facing, not the one behind it, assuming that it is not otherwise effected by a Law.
