Hello, new to the forums here. I stumbled upon Dungeon Plungin a few days ago during a quest to make my own simplified board game for my ten-year-old son and me. Dungeon Plungin fits the bill to a T. One request I have for you thinkers out there is there a way to make an abstract encounter system using graph paper. I do not always have time or resources to set up tiles and miniatures and to just be able to graph it out and play that way would be a big help. Any ideas on how to create this abstract system would be great. Eventually I plan to print out lots of mini's and tiles, but for travel or when time is short, an alternate system would be great. Thanks.

Hey Ian! Welcome to the forums! Are you suggesting a game with no minis? Something like a Random Dungeon Table would take care of the map. Each time a room would come up, you roll an Encounter (chests and monsters). If it's a hallway, roll on Events (like wandering monster, etc). Doors, traps and chests would work as normal. The tricky part is probably combat. I guess it would play like a typical rpg session, or more specifically like the classic Final Fantasy videogames. Heroes and monsters would get a single action, and initiative would play according to their MOV. Monster laws would have to change a bit, to reflect which hero is targeted (like attacking the hero with the highest ATK, or lowest LIFE, etc). You could probably use a simplified board for combat (like 3x3 or 4x4) or set characters in "back row" and "front row", for both parties, like in Final Fantasy. Try this flash game to see what I mean: armorgames.com/play/1614/monsters-den-the-book-of-dread(sidebar: I'd love to see a flash version of DP that plays like this! ) I keep telling myself, I need to make a sheet of counters to replace the minis. That would make the game more portable and faster/easier to cut and mount. Add a map that fits in a A4 folder, maybe make them magnetic and you're ready to travel! ;P

Cool, thanks for the tips. I have a ton of those D&D tiles they sell, so those will be put to good use. Thanks for the tip, I was thinking something along the line of pocket dungeon, but that is a bit to simple. My son by the way loves the characters, so I think I'll have to print those out regardless

Oh, Pocket Dungeon... I have that but, you know, I never had the patience to read through that... ...which I just did. So now I must print it.
