Here is the idea I would like to put forward for discussion: You have a Location Chart like normal, with hallways and rooms and intersections etc. If it is a room, you then roll on the Encounter Chart to determine whether it is Monsters or Chests or a mix. The Chart would have a maximum of 6 Chests. You then roll on the Preconfig Room Chart to determine the pattern the items will follow. I decided to go with 8 preconfigured rooms. 6 didn't seem like enough and more than 8 seemed to duplicate existing configurations or produce silly designs (chests in front of monsters etc.) I started playing a game with the new construction rules and it works very well. I just need to make sure the Monster tables have the monsters in the right order - Brutal, Frenzy and Swarm first, followed by Sneaky and Conspire. It actually makes the monsters work a lot better together. On the Monster Chart you would ensure the number of monster would not exceed the following 12 Melee Monsters 6 Ranged Monsters For Example You roll a 6x6 room on the Location Chart. You then roll Monsters and Chests (D4). You roll for the Monsters and get Orcs (D4) & Ghoblins (D8) & Snitches (D6). You then roll on the Preconfig Room Chart and get [2] You get 3 Orcs which you put on squares M1 to M3 You get 5 Ghoblins which you put on squares M4 to M8 You get 4 Snitches which you put on R1 to R4 You get 2 Chests which you put on C1 and C2 Continue to roll for doors etc.Once again, feedback will be appreciated.

Hmm... I like it
It's a great way to show how monster placement can be done, and also instructs you on how to do it on the fly (as long as you don't cheat!).
Makes up for a great variant rule. Make sure to add it to the rulebook, and fit it in a single page, so you can keep it handy.

I like the concept, but I wonder about the way its displayed...it's not a complicated concept, but on it's face, it kind of looks that way. I don't really have a suggestion for making it better, so I guess I can't complain much. It would definitely streamline monster placement.

If you just substitute the codes for images of chests and typical melee (goblin/orc) and ranged (sorcerer/archer) monsters, that will make it better.

Looks really interesting, but I noticed that there is a die type that correspond for each of the elements in here and this could allow to take this alternate room construction thing a bit further… Yes, you can see where I'm going with this, simply roll a die to determine in which square a monster will be placed (d12 for melee monsters, d6 for ranged monsters and chests). This will allow for a bit more variety as this way, monsters won't always occupy the first slots all the time… Of course, this brings up the problem of duplicate results, which may end up being a huge problem especially when lots of monsters must be rolled for… One solution could be to simply reroll, but rerolling the same occupied slot(s) many times in a row could potentially slow things down. In such cases, a quick solution would be to place a monster on the nearest available slot (if more than one is available, flip a coin or roll a dice). A bit more complex would be to place a monster in a randomly available adjacent square by rolling a d4 and consulting the diagram below; O = occupied square, 1-4 = die result 1 4 O 2 3 Alternatively, a d8 could be used instead to include diagonals squares; O = occupied square, 1-8 = die result 1 2 3 8 O 4 7 6 5 Hopes this help. Please tell me what you think.

That's an interesting idea, rolling d6 for ranged, and d12 for melee. I didn't consider that... Well, in the case of duplicates, I think you can reduce a die roll (or more) by simply placing the monster on the next slot. That wouldn't be cheating, it's still random, right? Oh, and welcome to the forums!
